Song Meaning[]

Anarchy by Lucian Green is about an army-ruled state. The type of anarchy mentioned in the song is about freedom, not chaos, death or violence. In the first verse, Lucian tells us his friend, an anarchist “wants no government”, i.e. wants no elected government, but wants freedom. Lucian wants his friend to be “happy” in anarchy, i.e. positive-minded and clear-thinking about how the army will rule the state and “friendly” in anarchy, i.e. active-minded in the running of the state through the army.

In the chorus, Lucian proclaims “Anarchy's for everyone”, meaning the type of anarchy he wants is possible everywhere in the state. The line “Just have fun” means anarchy is funness, and everything anarchy is fun. He sings “Baby, be free”, which is to his male partner and means the state is now in absolute control of the people. By singing “We want Anarchy” next, with “Anarchy” capitalised in the lyrics, he means he wants anarchy to stay, but could also mean he approves of the song he is singing, which is a result of the freedom he has.

In the second verse, the line “No one should rule”, means no person should overbearingly rule over him, but that “anarchy should rule”, in an apparent contradiction of terms (since anarchy is the opposite of something that can rule over us) the state of anarchy should rule instead of a person. The line “You will be with it” implies, like the introduction with the “Rule Britannia” tune (where Rule Britannia is anti-slavery for Britons) that his friends will defeat or prevent slavery by being free by being with-it. The final line, “Anarchy's a hit” obviously refers to this song being popular.

The bridge is a mixture of cultural and musical ideas, such as “playing pop” music, that claims the song Anarchy is in a prominent position song among pop songs, and other songs like it should be played, loving “hip-hop”, which is central to the musical and dance sides of the song, “Stories to weave”, which introduces the children's television show ”Play School” theme of reading stories to children, which contains the harmless theme of no overbearing person, but a child-like “anarchy” in stories, and “we will believe” in miracles (creations of a person as top-level in the state) in the absolutely free and creative environment of anarchy, as a reference to what has been revealed by Lucian's later songs (Abracadabra and Abracadabra 2) to be his religion.
